THE STORY

Sometimes, understanding begins when we look beyond our first association.

Our Enlightenment was created around exactly this idea.

In Buddhism, the swastika has a history and meaning that long predates its appropriation by Nazi Germany. Within Buddhist traditions, it can carry positive spiritual meanings and is associated with concepts including auspiciousness and the Buddha.

For this MIVOR design, however, the controversial symbol itself is deliberately replaced by a sun. The current product description explains that the sun represents the Buddhist symbolism behind the original inspiration.

The result invites us to think about something bigger:

Symbols can carry completely different meanings across cultures, religions and periods of history. What one person immediately associates with hatred may have existed within another cultural tradition for centuries with an entirely different meaning.

Understanding that history does not erase or minimize the suffering connected to the Nazi symbol.

Instead, Our Enlightenment encourages us to educate ourselves about context before assuming that our own association is the only one that exists.

On the left sleeve, a quote attributed on the current product page to the Dalai Lama reinforces the idea of moving beyond judgment.
